Saga of Jaraah
Situated northeast of Aval City along the coast, Negal is renowned for its winds. Besides Sacred Aval, the god of wind Kaikias has a substantial following here. In fact, Negal hosts the largest temple to Kaikias in all of Jaraah.
The main city sits atop a stone promontory that has been blown bare of all soil and vegetation. Most structures are built of white stone quarried along the coast. A small harbor and warehouse district rest at the foot of the cliff face defining the eastern border of the city. People can descend a stairway cut into the cliff face from the city proper, but the stairway is unsuitable for large quantities of goods. Those must travel the long way around, inland first, then towards the coast along gentler slopes, and finally along to coast to the harbor.
The local economy synergistically benefits from the confluence of wind, fish, and pigs. Negalese fishermen bring in their haul which is dried in the wind for export. Meanwhile, the fish heads and guts are fed to the pigs which are then also dried in the wind to produce the excellent ham known as ‘Negalutto’.
The territory surrounding Negal is home to a large number of windmills used for all manner of wind-driven industrial processes including milling grains, cutting raw timber, stamping metal, and weaving cloth. Because of this, the Windmills Chapter of the Aval Carpenter Guild is headquartered in Negal.
The Zakhm Brothers have a firm hold on affairs in Negal as they do throughout Aval. They engage in their usual racketeering activities as well as smuggling of select goods to avoid tariffs and other regulations.
