Rules

For simplicity, there are only three cases when it comes to food.

  1. Full Rations
  2. Half Rations
  3. No Rations

Full Rations

Obviously, there are no penalties for operating under full rations.

Half Rations

“Grace Period:” Characters can operate normally under half rations for 10 days, but they cannot regain any hit points naturally. Magical healing still applies.

After the tenth day, characters must roll a save vs. death or suffer 1d4 damage, -1 STR, -1 CON, -1 Morale. The penalties are cumulative. Characters with exceptional strength are first reduced to plain 18 strength. Characters reaching 0 STR can no longer move. Characters reaching 0 CON are dead. Characters reaching 0 HP continue to lose 1 HP per round until they are dead.

No Rations: Assuming Previously Enjoying Full Rations

Characters can operate normally under zero rations for 5 days, but they cannot regain any hit points naturally. Magical healing still applies.

After the fifth day, characters must roll a save vs. death with a -4 penalty or suffer 1d4 damage, -1 STR, -1 Morale. 1d4 damage, -1 STR, -1 CON, -1 Morale. The penalties are cumulative. Characters with exceptional strength are first reduced to plain 18 strength. Characters reaching 0 STR can no longer move. Characters reaching 0 CON are dead. Characters reaching 0 HP continue to lose 1 HP per round until they are dead.

No Rations: Assuming Previously on Half Rations

If the characters have been on half rations during the 10 day “grace period,” they can still operate normally without rations on a pro-rated basis. For example, if they’ve been on half rations for 5 days, they can go on zero rations for an additional 3 days (rounding up) without penalties, but unable to heal naturally.

If the characters are already past the 10 day “grace period,” they switch to the zero rations rules for saving throws vs. death (-4 penalty).

Other Considerations

Characters with the Endurance proficiency gain a +2 bonus to save.

Characters with the Survival proficiency who are in appropriate terrain may be able to find enough food to avoid starvation.

Recover

Characters must be on full rations in order to recover. They regain 1 point of STR, CON, and Morale per day until they regain their original values. HP are regained normally.

If characters have not fully recovered their STR and CON, then they go back to starvation if they go back to half or no rations (no grace period).
